Arranging a Western Union money transfer abroad

Fast, reliable, convenient, and affordable: Western Union is a great way to send money overseas.

Whether it's for supporting family who live abroad, sending a cash gift to a friend for their birthday, or helping out a loved one who is in need of emergency funds while travelling, millions of people use Western Union to send cash around the globe.

Tell us how much money you'd like to send, the destination, and the details of the person it's going to.

You can then inform the person you're sending to, and pass on the reference number. All they need to do is go to their nearest Western Union branch and show ID to collect their cash.

What identification do you need?

When you're sending money, proof of identity is required for all transactions of £600 or more. For transactions of £2,000 or more, you will also need a proof of address (dated within three months).

When you're receiving money, proof of identity will be required for all transactions regardless of the amount. For transactions of £2,000 or more, you will also need a proof of address (dated within three months).

How does the exchange rate work?

When you send money via Western Union at the Money Shop, the exchange rate is locked at the point you made the payment. This means that the amount of cash the recipient collects will be exactly what was agreed – it won't be affected by fluctuations in the exchange rate.

This is helpful if you are using the next-day service, as exchange rates can change daily. However, as your rate is locked in, there'll be no surprises.
