Try different traditions
Valentine’s Day isn’t just a Western thing: it’s celebrated all over the world (albeit sometimes on different days).
For this year, switch your typical celebrations and put other traditions to the test. In South Africa on Valentine’s Day, women literally wear their hearts on their sleeves by pinning the name of their love interest on them.
In Japan, the women shower men with gifts of chocolate on Valentine’s Day. Then on March 14th (known as “White Day”), it’s up to men to return the favour, sending presents to the women in their lives!
Because nothing says “I love you” more than jumping out of a plane after one another, right?!
If just the thought is making you feel queasy, then don’t worry. Red Letter Days offer tons of unique experiences you and your partner can get involved in: hot air balloon rides, driving experiences, horse riding… you can even design your own perfumes! Offers are available across the UK, so you’re sure to find something near you.
If you want to spend an evening out on the town, then going to a stand-up comedy event is a perfect alternative to your typical Valentine’s Day night out.
There are lots of comedy events taking place across different cities all year round. From acts just waiting for their big breakthrough, to some of the nation’s favourite comedians; take your pick as to who you want to see. A quick Google search will be able to tell you who’s got a gig on near you.
Be tourists in your own city
It’s easy to lose sight of your favourite parts of the city you’re living in, when you’re constantly caught up in the daily grind.
Why not plan a day with your loved one, and make it your mission to do all of the touristy stuff in your hometown? Museums, parks, landmarks… all guaranteed to help you appreciate your home that little bit more!
If you and your partner are both fans on the great outdoors, then check out Go Ape for alternative Valentine’s Day ideas!
There are lots of activities to take part in: from tree top obstacle courses to Segway tours and zip trekking – all in forest surroundings.
There’s nothing wrong with a traditional candlelit meal on Valentine’s Day, but sometimes it’s nice to do something unexpected and alternative. Hopefully we’ve inspired you to try out something new this year!
